The Osun State commissioner for education, Oladoyin Folorunso, on Monday, 19th September, 2022, has revealed that during their visits to schools in the state, the ministry discovered 47 teachers in several public school are having mental health issues.

Folorunso made this known while addressing a press conference to acquaint parents and guardians with salient issues in the education sector as the 2022/2023 academic session.

He added that instead of sacking the affected teachers, the government sent them to undergo rehabilitation program.

“We also discovered that 47 active teachers at various schools were suffering from different mental health challenges. Rather than disengaging them, we place them on rehabilitation programme after which two have resumed their duty post”, the commissioner added.

According to Folorunso, the state is also tackling with the problem of quack teachers, especially with the deployment of National Youth Service Corps members as main teachers and N-power teachers to ensure that students get quality service delivery. Hence, recruitment of 2500 teachers to deliver on the vision.

He also said they discovered that some teachers were no longer working in the state but were still earning salaries.

“During visits to schools, we discovered that some teachers were no longer working in the state but were still earning salaries. A teacher relocated to the United States of America over two years ago, yet she was drawing a salary on a monthly basis”, he said.
