The Abia State Governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, for the forthcoming election, Uchenna Ikonne, has passed away on the 25th January 2023, at the National Hospital in Abuja at the age of 67.

His death occurred 45 days to the governorship election which has been slated for the 11th January 2023.

In a statement by his son, Uche- Ikonne Chikezie, he disclosed that his father died after a brief illness on Wednesday 25th January 2023, at the National Hospital, Abuja.

The statement further stated that Ikonne had earlier received treatment at a United Kingdom hospital, and was recovering, but relapsed a few days ago leading to multiple cardiac arrests.

According to the statement

 “I regret to announce the death of my dear father, Prof Eleazar Uchenna Ikonne, who died at the National Hospital Abuja today, 25th January 2023 by 4am after a brief illness.

He was recovering after taking proper treatment in the United Kingdom, but relapsed a few days ago leading to multiple cardiac arrests for which he didn’t recover from. He passed away as a result of his injuries.

Further details and arrangements would be made known to the public after deliberations and meetings are made within the family. Further information would be made known to the public,”

Mr Ikonnem, until his death was a Professor of Optometry and former Vice Chancellor of the Abia State University Uturu,

Governor Okezie Ikeazu of Abia State earlier this month confirmed that PDP government candidate, Professor Ikonne, was ill and therefore, was unable to attend political rallies ahead of forthcoming general elections.

He is survived by his wife,  Mrs Uche Ikonne and two sons.
