The Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna State recently promoted Lt. Col. Abubakar-Surajo Imam to the esteemed rank of Professor in Mechatronics Engineering, making him the first serving member of the Nigerian Army to achieve this historic title.

Brig.-Gen. A.M. Tukur, the Academy’s Registrar, officially announced this promotion on Friday, 16th November 2023, following the ratification made during the NDA Council Meeting in September.
The effective date of this elevation was October 1, 2023.
Imam who is ,originally from Kankia in Katsina State, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bayero University, Kano State, along with a Master’s Degree and Ph.D. in Mechatronics and Robotics from Newcastle University, United Kingdom.
Imam’s noteworthy contributions to Research and Development have significantly boosted the Academy’s reputation and visibility among Nigerian universities.
Notably, his efforts have led to the establishment of the NDA Department of Mechatronic Engineering and the Centre for Innovation and Creativity.
The center plays a pivotal role in advancing Nigeria’s Military Industrial Complex by fostering innovation in cutting-edge technologies, thereby reducing the country’s reliance on foreign technical solutions.
