The National Drug, Law and Enforcement Agency, NDLEA recently arrested three blind men who were part of an illegal drug ring operating between Lagos and Kano. Another member of the group, who is also disabled, is currently evading capture.

According to Mr Femi Babafemi, NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, on Sunday, 5th November 2023, the arrest of Adamu Hassan (40) on October 28 with 12 kilograms of skunk on the Gwagwalada Expressway in the FCT led to the uncovering of the syndicate.

Investigations revealed that Hassan was unaware of the bag’s contents, which he was meant to deliver in Kano.

Further operations resulted in the arrest of the syndicate’s ringleader, Bello Abubakar (45), who also has impaired vision.

During questioning, Abubakar, a married individual with five children, confessed to engaging in the illicit drug business for the past five years after residing in Lagos for three decades. Another member, Muktar Abubakar (59), living in Lagos for 40 years, admitted to being a joint owner of the enterprise with Bello Abubakar. Akilu Amadu (25), the third suspect with impaired vision, contributed funds to the illegal trade and was responsible for delivering the consignment to Hassan in Lagos for transportation to Kano.

Malam Aminu, another visually impaired individual, who was expected to receive the delivery in Kano, is currently on the run.
