FIFA, the football governing body, has changed its plans to host the U-20 World cup in Indonesia following a meeting held on Wednesday, 29th March, 2023 between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and President of the Football Association of Indonesia, PSSI, Eric Thohir.

The decision was occasioned by the current misfortune in Indonesia which occured in October, 2022, where there was excessive and indiscriminate use of tear gas by police causing a deadly crush at a football stadium in East Java, leaving 135 people dead.

FIFA said it would decide if the Indonesia Football Association will be sanctioned. but will like to underline that despite this decision, it remains committed to actively assist the PSSI in the transformation process of Indonesia football.

The global soccer body said a new host will be decided and announced as soon as possible but the dates of the tournament remains unchanged.

Both FIFA President and the PSSI President are expected to meet again.
