Brazilian defender, Dani Alves, who played in Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, will be tried on sexual assault charges in a Spanish high court, for allegedly raping a young woman in the bathroom of a nightclub in late December 2022.

This is according to an Agence France-Presse, AFP, report published on Monday, 31st July 2023.

The incident was said to have occured, when Alves was on holiday in Barcelona, after playing for Brazil at the World Cup in Qatar.

Based on the report, the court is yet to fix a date for the trial of the said case.

The 40-year-old Brazilian’s bail requests have been denied because he is considered a flight risk, and he is expected to remain in jail awaiting the trial.

Alves has been asked to handover his passports and wear a tracking device.

According to the report, Spain’s sexual consent law passed in 2022 prescribes a maximum sentence of 15 years for rape cases.
