Former Super Eagles captain and Chelsea legend, Mikel Obi has revived the comparison between himself and Atlanta 1996 Olympics legend, Kanu Nwankwo after he asserted himself as Nigeria’s most successful player in a recent episode of his podcast, featuring Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen.

Upon the online circulation of snippets from the podcast, some football fans on social media vehemently contended that the most successful player was not Mikel Obi but rather Kanu Nwankwo, citing the trophies and awards accumulated during their active years.

Kanu’s achievements include six league titles from Nigeria, Holland, and England, along with a UEFA Champions League trophy. He was also named African Footballer of the Year twice and holds an Olympic medal.

While Mikel Obi might lack an Olympic medal or the title of African Footballer of the Year, he boasts a UEFA Champions League victory, an African Nations Cup trophy, and four EnEnglish FA trophies, one more than Kanu’s three.

This debate regarding Nigeria’s most successful player has been ongoing for quite some time now.

Nigerians remain divided, unable to reach a consensus on whether Kanu Nwankwo or Mikel Obi should hold the distinction of being the most successful.
