The Nigerian Copyright Commission, NCC has dedicated this year’s World Book and Copyright Day to honor Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, and has officially declared July 13th, as ‘National Reading Day’ in celebration of his 90th birthday.

Director-General of the NCC, John Asein, emphasized the significance of allowing individuals to read in their preferred manner and location.

Asein, highlighted Soyinka’s towering presence in Nigeria’s literary landscape and his advocacy for books, reading, and copyright, making him the focal point of this year’s celebration. Additionally, the commission is urging stakeholders in the book industry to embrace July 13th as Nigeria’s National Reading Day, aligning with Soyinka’s milestone birthday.

World Book and Copyright Day, observed annually on April 23rd by UNESCO, focuses on promoting books, celebrating authors, encouraging reading, ensuring access to knowledge, and raising awareness about copyright issues. This year’s theme, ‘Read Your Way,’ underscores the importance of individual reading preferences.

Soyinka emphasized the importance of intellectual property rights for authors, expressing concern over the prevalence of pirated copies of literary works.

He called for concerted efforts to protect intellectual property, emphasizing its crucial role in the global intellectual landscape.

To reach a wider audience, the NCC plans to publish more books in indigenous languages and utilize digital platforms.

Their year-long intervention programs, outlined in the ABC Action Plan, Adopt measures, Bring books closer, Choose change champions, aim to promote reading for pleasure and foster respect for copyright.
