Nigerian music icons Burna Boy and Rema made history by winning the Afrobeats category for the first time at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards on Monday, 20th November 2023.
Despite fierce competition from Wizkid, Tems, and Rema, Burna Boy prevailed in the Top Afrobeats Artist category.
The winner of the Top Afrobeats Song award went to Rema’s hit single “Calm Down,” featuring Selena Gomez.
However Calm Down’ did not win in other nominated categories, such as Top Radio Song and Top Billboard Global, Excl. US song, despite its successes.
Country music artist Morgan Wallen took home the biggest win of the evening with an astounding 11 victories, closely followed by Taylor Swift with 10 victories.
