Nigerian Artists, Rema and Ayraa Starr have been nominated for the 2023 edition of the annual MTV Video Music Awards, VMAS, in the newly created category of Best Afrobeats, announced by the award body on Tuesday, 9th August 2023.
Rema wasa nominated for his song for ‘Calm Down’, featuring Selena Gomez, While Ayra Star got hers for her song, “Rush” and Wizkid feature, Sugar’,
Other nominees include, Davido ft Musa Keys for “Unavailable”, Fireboy DML & Asake for ‘Bandana’ and Burna Boy for “It’s Plenty”.
According to MTV, the nominees for the newly minted ‘Best Afrobeats’ category are African artists who’ve made significant strides on the global scene in the year in review.
This addition comes in response to the rising global popularity of the Afrobeats genre.
Meanwhile, Rema’s Calm Down’ was nominated in the “Song of the Year” and “Best Collaboration” categories.
The 2023 VMAs are scheduled to take place on September 12, 2023, airing live from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
