The House of Representatives, during the plenary session on Tuesday, 11th July, 2023 directed the National Universities Commission, NUC to suspend the implementation of Federal Universities’ tuition fee increase.

The directive was given following a motion by Honourable Aliyu Madaki, a member from Kano state, who expressed concern that the hike in fees by some Federal Universities across the country, such as Bayero University, Kano, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Uyo, among others, is happening amid the worsening poverty level, rate of unemployment and the recent fuel price hike.

He added that tertiary education is imperative in fostering growth, reducing poverty, and boosting the prosperity of any nation.
According to Honourable Madaki, the inability of NUC to do the needful could aggravate the insecurity situation in the country, as the increment may force some students to defer their studies and others could drop out.
In adopting the motion, the House, therefore, urged the NUC to immediately halt the implementation of the increment in tuition fees of Federal Universities.
The House also mandated the Committee on Tertiary Education and Services, when constituted to investigate the increment in fees of Federal Universities with a view to proffering solutions to the challenges plaguing the University system in Nigeria.
