Nigerian R&B Afrobeats singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has earned an MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best Hip Hop Video. This is for her contribution to Future’s ‘Wait for U‘ hit featuring Drake which samples vocals from Tems’ ‘Higher.’

The single is one of the songs on Future’s 9th solo studio album ‘I Never Liked You.

The song, ‘Wait For U’ debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 thus earning Tems her third Billboard Hot 100 entry. This makes her the second Afrobeat act to reach number one on the chart, after Wizkid.

The full list of nominees which was released has the gifted singer as the only Nigerian artist nominated for any of the awards.

The award ceremony which would be held on the 29th of August 2022 would give room for Tems to add another feather to her cap on her way to global domination. The singer has nominated alongside, Doja Cat, Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, and several others.

The success of her 2019 single,Try Me’ saw her emerge into a big name in the music industry. The video currently has over 12 million views on YouTube. Also, the song she released with American musician, Khalid, and Nigeria’s Davido, landed her right in the hall of fame.

The alternative singer’s journey into the music industry began when she was 20. She released her first EP, ‘Time Swap EP‘ in 2013.

Her single ‘Looku Looku‘ was widely accepted and received massive airplay on Nigerian radio stations. Although, ‘Try me‘ was the track that helped her trajectory to the top.
