Nigerian Sensational singer, Temilade Openiyi, also known as ‘Tems‘ has emerged winner of the ‘Best International Act’ at the just concluded BET Awards 2022.

Tems is the first female act to receive the award at the ceremony, which took place at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles.

The 27-year-old ‘Damages’ singer beat Fireboy, Dave from the UK, Dinos from France, Fally Ipupa from Congo, Little Simz from the UK, Ludmilla from Brazil, Major League Djz from South Africa, and Tayc from France; to secure the award.

“BET, thank you so much for this; thank you so much. It’s an honour… I mean, this is my first award show that I’m winning something and I just want to use this as an opportunity to speak to every single young, old, whatever, every single woman watching this, every single girl watching this at home. Where I’m from, things like this don’t happen”, she said.

“Where I’m from, Lagos, Nigeria; this is a dream. And as you’re watching me, I want you to imagine yourself as me because you are meant to be here too.

“I dare you to get up from your seat and go for your dreams and fight for yourself because; you can do it”, she proclaimed.

She added that; “If you’re waiting for a sign from God, take this as that sign. E go be”, before making the peace sign then walked off stage.

The singer’s collaboration with Wizkid on his global hit, “Essence” which also featured Justin Bieber earned her a second award, “Best Collaboration.”

Tems joins the likes of Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido who have won the prestigious BET Award for the “Best International Act” category.

Receiving the award, Tems dedicated it to every young woman, artistes striving to live their dreams someday.
