The Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, has been conferred with a Doctor of Science Honoris Causa by the University of Maiduguri’s Senate during the institution’s combined 24th convocation ceremony on Saturday, 18th November, 2023.
The Visitor to the University, President Bola Tinubu, who was represented by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima at the 24th Convocation Ceremony, assured Nigerian Universities that the federal government was working towards tackling the infrastructural deficit bedeviling tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
He however urged Nigerian Universities to deploy innovative strategies to make them globally competitive.
The president also congratulated the graduates for their resilience in achieving the feat of graduating and charged them to be good ambassadors.
The Vice President in his remarks, credited the institution with shaping his journey in life and expressed gratitude to the educators and mentors for their guidance,acknowledging that the university laid the foundation for his success.
While Highlighting the significance of the honor the Vice President Shettima pledged to uphold the institution’s values.

He urged the graduands, those before them and the institution itself to become symbols of the privileges that a well-tailored education offers.
He commended the University for their excellence in education and service to the people of Maiduguri and humanity as a whole.
The VP emphasized the importance of purpose in education, stating that the true value lies in what one does with acquired knowledge.
The governor of Borno state, Babagana Zulum, eulogised the VP, stating that he deserved the honour for his exemplary leadership and commitment to education as well as his philanthropic efforts.
During the convocation, VP Shettima inaugurated the one billion Naira, Abdulsamad Rabiu International Center for Innovations and Entrepreneurship.
Notably, honorary doctorates were also bestowed upon the Shehu of Borno, Abdul Samad Rabiu, and Alhaji Dr. Dahiru Bobbo for their significant contributions to the university and society.
Dignitaries present at the convocation ceremony included the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Garbai El-Kanemi; Governors Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State and Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State.
Others include Secretary to Government of the Federation SGF, George Akume, and Deputy Governor of Borno State, Umar Usman Kadafur, Director General of FRCN, Mohammed Bulama among others.
