The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has instructed its members to participate in the nationwide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress TUC, which commenced on midnight,13th November 2023.

Emanuel Osadeke, ASUU President

ASUU’s President, Emmanuel Osodeke, communicated this directive in a letter to ASUU zonal coordinators and branch chairpersons nationwide.

He emphasised the need to safeguard the interests of Nigerian workers and the union’s leadership by joining the NLC’s action.

The NLC announced the strike’s commencement from midnight on November 13th, aiming to continue until government entities fulfill their responsibilities, as highlighted by TUC President Festus Osifo’s statement on the same day.

A joint letter from NLC’s National Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, and TUC’s Secretary General, Nuhu Toro, was sent to affiliates demanding full compliance.

The unions urged these affiliates to issue circulars for maximum adherence, specifying that these circulars should be accessible at National Secretariats or shared on specific WhatsApp platforms.

These actions were prompted by the assault on NLC’s National President, Joe Ajaero, on 1st November 2023 in Imo State.
