The Federal Government is contemplating the relocation of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, in response to a recent jailbreak where 119 inmates escaped.

The Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo disclosed that the facility currently houses 499 inmates, far exceeding its initial capacity of 250 during a site inspection on Thursday, February 24, 2024.

He confirmed that 119 inmates had fled, with 13 subsequently recaptured.

This decision comes amidst plans by the facility management to release the names and photographs of the escapees.

The jailbreak occurred as heavy rainfall battered the area on Wednesday, 24th April 2024, causing significant damage to the custodial center, including breaches in the perimeter fence, facilitating the escape of numerous inmates.
