Nigeria has reportedly cut power supply to Niger Republic as one of the sanctions from the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, following the coup in the country.

According to reports, residents of the cities of Niamey, Maradi, and Zinder in Niger are experiencing blackout.

BBC News reported that Niger’s electricity company, Nigelec, confirmed the development and noted that it is because Nigeria cut its supply.

Nigeria is said to be a major supplier of electricity to Niger, its neighbor to the North.

The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has on Sunday, 30th July 2023, imposed sanctions including a travel ban and a blockade on Niger pending the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum who was ousted by the military on 26th July 2023.

ECOWAS leaders have condemned the coup and pronouncement of support by foreign governments and foreign private military contractors while threatening the use of force as a last resort.
