Nigerian singer, Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has won the first Best Afrobeats award at the MTV Video Music Award, VMA, on Tuesday, 12th September, 2023.

MTV’s VMAs event was held at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, USA, honouring some of the renowned names in the top 40 arena.

Rema won MTV’s Video Music Awards, VMAs, award for the inaugural ‘Best Aftobeats’ category, with his hit song ‘calm down’ remix with Selena Gomez.

The Jonzin World label star, beat other Afrobeats contemporaries such as, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Ayra Starr, Fireboy DML and Asake to clinch the inaugural award.

In his acceptable speech, Rema thanked God, his team and fans.

“Big shout out to Selena, I wanna say I love you from the bottom of my heart. This means so much, seeing Afrobeats grow this big and being here on the stage representing Afrobeats tonight. I am so happy.”

The award-winning song, recently joined the billion stream club on Spotify, becoming the first African song to achieve such a feat.

Singer Rema, became the second African artist to win a VMA award after Wizkid in 2021.
