Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured their place in their first final in 11 years at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations AFCON, tournament by defeating South Africa’s Bafana Bafana 4-2 on penalties on Wednesday, 7th February 2024.

The match ended 1-1 after extra time, with both goals coming from penalties. Captain William Troost-Ekong scored for Nigeria in the 67th minute, while Teboho Mokoena equalized for South Africa in the 90th minute.

Despite Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen initially scoring a second goal, it was disallowed after a foul on South Africa’s Percy Tau.

Nigeria’s coach Jose Peseiro made one change to the lineup, bringing in Bright Osayi-Samuel. Star forward Victor Osimhen started after recovering from an abdominal discomfort.

The match saw intense action, including a red card for Kekana, before heading to penalties. Nigeria emerged victorious, with Nwabali saving two penalties.
