A Zookeeper named Olabode Olawuyi, tragically lost his life on Monday, 19th February 2024, at the zoological garden of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, in Ile-Ife, Osun State, after a lion attacked him while he was feeding it.

According to Abiodun Olanrewaju, the university’s spokesperson, The incident occurred while Olawuyi, a seasoned veterinary technologist who had been overseeing the zoological garden for over a decade, was feeding the animals in their den.

According to Olarenwaju, the nine-year-old male lion attacked him, despite efforts by fellow staff members to rescue him.

He stated that the entire OAU community is in mourning following the tragic loss of Mr. Olatunji

The university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, immediately halted a meeting to assess the situation firsthand.

Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre, confirmed that despite all medical efforts, Olawuyi could not be saved.

In response to the tragic event, the aggressive lion was euthanized.

The University also disclosed that Mr. Olawuyi had been caring for the lions since their birth on campus nine years ago.

They extended condolences to Olawuyi’s family, urging them to find solace in faith during this difficult time.

Additionally, Professor Bamire disclosed that the University has initiated a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the incident.
