President Bola Tinubu has invoked the Principle of the Presidential Prerogative of Mercy to authorize the partial waiver of the “No Work, No Pay” Order that had been imposed on striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

This was contained in a statement signed by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, on Friday, 20th October, 2023.

This decision comes in the wake of the eight-month industrial action initiated on February 14, 2022, and concluded on October 17, 2022.

President Tinubu’s action stems from his commitment to alleviate the challenges faced during the implementation of vital economic reforms in the nation.

It also acknowledges the faithful execution of agreements reached during constructive dialogues between ASUU and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Under this exceptional waiver, striking ASUU members will now receive four months’ worth of withheld salary accruals out of the eight months affected by the industrial action.

The President has directed that this waiver comes with a prerequisite: the Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment must establish a Document of Understanding, DoU, that explicitly states this as the final waiver granted to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and all other Education Sector Unions.
