Tributes and condolences from fans and dignitaries have flooded in for the late comedic actor, John Okafor, affectionately known as Mr. Ibu, who tragically passed away at the age of 62 after suffering a heart attack on Saturday, 2nd March 2024, following a prolonged illness that led to the amputation of one of his legs.

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu in a statement released on Sunday, 3rd March 2024, condoled with the family of Mr Ibu and his colleague, Tolani Oyebamiji also known as Sisi Quadiri who also passed on over the weekend.

Governor of Enugu state, Peter Mbah hailed the actor as an illustrious son of the state who brought joy to people’s homes.

Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate expressed his sorrow on Twitter, hailing Mr. Ibu as a legendary actor whose infectious laughter brought joy and happiness to countless audiences.

His colleague, Charles Inojie wrote on Instagram, “‘ Rest in peace King, you can have it all now, that which eluded you when you needed it the most”.

Ghanaian artist, Kwado Nkansah popularly known as Lil Win, condoled with Nigeria and Nollywood on Mr. Ibu’s passing.

Also, Comedian, Bovi lamented the loss of Mr. Ibu, noting that his passing marks a somber moment in Nigerian entertainment history.

Other celebrities who posted condolences on social media, include Actress, Funke Akindele, Zimbabwean filmmaker, Hopewell Chin’ono, Singer, Peter Okoye of P Square, Skitmaker Sabinus, and Content creator Nasboi amongst others.

Fans from around Africa also mourned the loss of the beloved actor.

Nalatokozane, a fan from South Africa, shared his sadness and fond memories of Mr. Ibu, while Nohalapera from Uganda reminisced about how Mr. Ibu’s talent brightened his childhood, underscoring the actor’s profound influence on African culture.

Legendary Joe from Nigeria poignantly remarked that heaven itself would echo with laughter as one of Africa’s finest comedic talents graced its gates.

John Ikechukwu Okafor, born on October 17, 1961, rose to fame through his iconic portrayal of comedic characters in over 200 Nollywood films, including the popular Mr. Ibu series.

Despite starting as a member of the camera crew, Mr. Ibu’s transition to acting in 1992 proved to be a turning point in his career.

His breakout role in the 2004 film “Mr. Ibu” propelled him to stardom and earned him the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Comic Actor in Nigeria in 2005.

Throughout his illustrious career, Mr. Ibu entertained audiences with his energetic and exaggerated acting style, endearing himself to fans with his portrayal of clumsy and naive characters.


Beyond acting, he briefly delved into music in the early 2000s, further showcasing his versatility as an entertainer.

A recipient of numerous accolades, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Mr. Ibu’s impact extended beyond the screen. As the founder of the Mr. Ibu Foundation, he dedicated himself to empowering underprivileged youth through education and vocational training, leaving behind a legacy of philanthropy and goodwill.

Despite facing health challenges in his later years, including the amputation of his leg in November 2023, Mr. Ibu remained resilient, buoyed by the support of his fans and loved ones.
