The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC on Wednesday, 22nd March, 2023 declared a nationwide strike to shut down branches of CBN nationwide, over the scarcity of cash in the country through its National President Joe Ajaero, which will commence on Wednesday, 29th March, 2023, during a media briefing in Abuja.

Ajaero, said that despite the Supreme Court order that the old N200, N500 and N1000 notes remain legal tender until 31st December, 2023, the situation is getting worse by the day, as workers cannot access cash to pay fares to work and buy food for their families.

He said;

Workers are directed to stay at home because people cannot eat, workers can no longer go to the office, we have been pushed to the wall and have decided to take our destiny in our hands, we have mobilised our workers on this exercise”.

He further gave a directive that affiliate unions constituting the NLC should be on standby as the aim is to shut down all branches of the Central Bank of Nigeria nationwide until something is done.

NLC had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to end the petrol and cash scarcity being experienced in the country but nothing has been done upon expiration of the deadline, thus the industrial action becomes necessary.
